Join us Saturday morning for the HYPAC Fun Run/Walk or Sleep-in Event to support our Hygiene Political Action Committee. Participants receive a HYPAC aluminum water bottle and can run/walk or sleep in. See the back of your registration form to sign up. New this year! Here’s how the Wall of Wine works: Purchase bottles by number – all labels will be hidden – at a flat rate of $15 per bottle or four bottles for $50. Your "lucky number" could yield you any number of outstanding wines! All proceeds benefit HYPAC.

Informative table clinics will be presented by Dental Hygiene Students from Idaho State University, Carrington College (formerly Apollo College) and Lewis & Clark State College. (1.5 CE)

Continuing Education—12.5 CE’s in two days

Medical Emergencies: More Than Just CPR Friday 8:00-11:30 am (3 CE)

Patti DiGangi , RDH, BS

Medical emergencies can and do occur, not only in your dental office but in any place and at any time. Should the unthinkable happen in your dental office – a catastrophic medical emergency – would you be able to save a life? Would you be able to say you did all you could? Would you be able to prove you did all you could? The entire dental team must be trained and emergency medical equipment and drugs must be available and current. The best way to handle an emergency is to start by being prepared.

By the end of the course the participant should be able to:
  • Name three aspects of patient assessment that must be completed prior to patient treatment
  • Identify possible contraindications to dental treatment
  • Describe signs and symptoms of common emergency situations
  • Manage overdose, allergic, and psychogenic local

Child and Adolescent Health: New Challenges for the 21st Century. Saturday 8:30-12:00 pm (3 CE)

Carol Jahn, RDH, MS

This course is designed to supply practitioners with current research and information on the new health challenges facing children and adolescents. The implications from the early-age adoption of adult behaviors and habits on health and life longevity will be discussed. Strategies for oral health interventions will be included.

Topics Include:

  • Exposure to tobacco, primary and second-hand smoke
  • Asthma
  • Obesity
  • The rising incidence of pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes
  • HPV and oral cancer
  • Prevention strategies for caries and gingivitis

Outcomes:

  • Identify the chronic diseases and conditions affecting children today
  • Discuss the impact of nutrition and physical activity on obesity and diabetes
  • Describe the impact of active and involuntary smoking on general health
  • List the effects of diabetes, obesity, smoking, and asthma on oral health
  • Understand the emerging link between HPV and oral cancer
  • Evaluate the measures available for caries and gingivitis reduction and recommend products/regimens appropriate to need

Boomers and Seniors: Living Longer and Healthier: Is Your Practice Ready? Saturday 1:45-5:00 pm (3 CE)

Carol Jahn, RDH, MS

This course is designed to provide the dental team with research and information to understand and recognize the overall health needs and expectations of Baby Boomers and Senior Citizens and provide them with quality care and patient service. Strategies for oral health interventions will be included.

Topics Include:

  • The aging of the population
  • Societal issues – retirement, income, housing
  • Chronic conditions – cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and, Alzheimer’s
  • Limitations and disabilities – osteoporosis, arthritis, vision and hearing impairments
  • Oral health implications
  • Oral health interventions

Outcomes:
  • Understand the societal and social impact of aging
  • Identify the chronic diseases and conditions affecting those over age 45
  • Discuss the potential risks between oral and systemic health
  • Recognize how physical limitations affect daily self care
  • Evaluate the self care measures available for the reduction of gingivitis and bleeding and recommend products/regimens appropriate to need

Speakers

Patti DiGangi , RDH, BS

Patti DiGangi, RDH, BS is a vision-driven person finding strength and direction from her inner convic-tions. Like most true visionaries, she views obstacles as learning experiences that can be used for self development. As a life long learner, her energetic, thought provoking and successful program development and mind bending view of what can be shines a bright light for others to preview the future and find their place in it.

Patti’s articles appear regularly in RDH Magazine, Dental Economics and Inside Dentistry and she is a regular contributor to DentistryIQ.com. She is a member of the 2010 Dental Products Report Perio Clinical 360 Team. Patti is currently co-writing a book on minimal intervention philosophy.

Patti is a certified presenter through Academy of General Dentistry National Speaker’s Bureau for Periodontal Disease and a member of multiple key opinion leader boards and on the advisory board for the National Museum of Dentistry. She is a member of the National Speaker’s Association working toward her Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) credential and member of the Linda Miles Speaking and Consulting Network (SCN). 

Carol Jahn, RDH, MS

Carol Jahn has a BS in dental hygiene from the University of Iowa and an MS in Continuing Education and Training Management from the University of St. Francis. She has been a dental hygienist for 28 years with 14 years as a clinician.

As the Senior Professional Relations Manager for WaterPik, Inc, Carol designs multimedia educational programs for dental professionals. She is a nationally recognized speaker having provided more than 200 continuing education programs for dental professionals. Additionally, she has published more than sixty papers, contributed to seven textbooks, and serves on the advisory board for RDH Magazine and the corporate council for Dimensions of Dental Hygiene.

Carol has been a lifelong active member of the ADHA; she is a past president of the West Suburban Dental Hygienists’ Society and the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association and past treasurer of the ADHA. She is one of two ADHA delegates to the International Federation of Dental Hygiene meeting in June 2010 in Scotland.
